…i was talking with luke one day about his myspace friends

“who is that gorgeous black woman on your page?”

“oh, grandiva? we went to school together, i’ve known her for years”

“she’s fabulous!”

then a couple of days later, she was in atlanta visiting for business. i got a call from luke that they were around the corner from where i lived having a beer and i should come and join them.

i did, i was in tow with someone and we were headed to a birthday party. immediatley, ms. fabulous and i connected, as if we’d always known each other and were catching up rather than meeting for the first time…luke disappeared, my friend disappeared…not literally, they were still sitting there, but they were merely background noise…

we began talking about music: radiohead, hall & oats, queen (and how george micheal should be singing for them now, not paul rogers) we talked of the state of the world and connected on being a single mother raising a pre-teen in it…we spoke of relationships, SATC, movies and what “real” beer is and is not

two hours flew by, i had to go make the appearence at the party…we took some pictures and she left the next day…i was sad…i couldn’t really put my finger on why, but i felt sad that i had to go…

some months later GD and i were still connecting, a deeply bonded friendship grew roots…we talked, laughed, loved and cried…and have every day since…she has seen me through some pretty tough times (and every hair color) without her in my life, i can honestly say i would be a mess…she holds my hands when i need support and slaps them when i need scolding…she instinctively knows when i need her, we finish each other thoughts when chatting and several times a day we have to ask if “i can have the brain now?” we are samantha and miranda, jack and karen, thelma and louise….she is truly my rock, my sanctuary, my inner-monologue…my best friend, my soulmate, my sister.

on this day, her special day, i wonder if you’d to help me honor her and wish her all the blessings and love that she’s given me, and everyone who’s life she’s blessed.

love you more mama, happy birthday!
